To "make the best better," one of our goals is to do a community service project every quarter.
Here is a snapshot of community service projects our club has participated in since we geared up in late 2012:
Military Care Packages - Our club gathered items to send overseas in April, 2015. We wanted to give back to the troops that give so much to us. We sent several goodies, fun items, toiletries and of course handwritten notes letting them know how much we appreciate them. THANK YOU TO ALL THE SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!
TREES - Our club went to Travelers Rest Elders Equine Sanctuary on Saturday, July 12, 2014. It was a terribly hot and humid Saturday morning and we were small in number, but we got a lot of work done. The Smiths do a wonderful job taking care of these equine friends that have special needs. Some have even been surrendered because the owner could no longer afford to take care of them and have health issues. If you have some spare time, contact them and do some volunteer work there. They are always in need of donations as well. Our club will be doing a concession stand/car wash at the Firestone at Harrison's Crossings on Saturday, August 16th, from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. 100% of the proceeds will benefit TREES. Come on our to get your car washed and grab some food!
Montague Family Benefit - Our most recent community service project involved a pancake breakfast on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Chancellor Baptist Church. Most of us are familiar with the tragic house fire in January that destroyed the home of the Montague family on Lee Hill School Road in Spotsylvania/ The fire also claimed the life of their 14-year old autistic son, Xavier. Due to all the support we received from the community, we raised nearly $1,400 to help the Montagues through this difficult time. A BIG THANK YOU to the wonderful people of Chancellor Baptist Church, Terry and James English (from the Hampton Inn - Fredericksburg South) who donated much needed food and volunteered as our cooks, and the businesses that donated items to make this event possible.
Adopt A Family – In the spirit of Christmas, our members decided that they wanted to help a local family in need of support. We found a single mother with two children who could use our help. These kids certainly exceeded the leaders’ expectations: They not only went out shopping to buy gifts for the children, but also the mother, plus donated enough money to buy gift cards and a complete holiday dinner for the family.
Food Bank – Because we were hearing so many advertisements on the radio for community support to replenish the food supply at our local food bank, we voted to support this endeavor. Our members collected so many food items, we donated boxes of non-perishable items to the Food Bank!
Marine Corp. Half Marathon – When our club was asked by Homes For Our Troops if we would help them support the Marathon held in May in Fredericksburg, we were eager to assist. Turns out, we were official cheerers for the thousands of runner who signed up for this event. If you were there, you may have seen us sporting bright yellow t-shirts, yelling and cheering on the runners as they rounded the turn by Hospital Hill. We were proud to give back to those that have risked their lives to serve our country and to protect our freedom.
Animal Awareness & Assistance - This is a new local rescue group that seeked our assistance in painting 100 horseshoes, to be used to generate revenue at their official opening. The proceeds will be used to buy feed, medicines, whatever else they need to be able to properly care for animals in need.
The list does not stop there as we have more in the planning stages. Check back later for updates on other projects we will be doing during our second year of serving the community.
